New rights to accessible information from the NHS and social care

By 31st July 2016 all organisations that provide NHS or publicly funded adult social care must have fully implemented and conform to the NHS Accessible Information Standard.

The Standard is important for people with a learning disability, and sets out what must be done to:

  • Identify their communication and information needs
  • Record communication and information needs on the person’s record
  • Have in place a flagging system so that members of staff can see straight away from someone’s medical record if they have a communication or information support need
  • Share information and communication needs of the person with other professionals, if appropriate.
  • Meet the communication and information needs identified. For example, send an appointment letter in easy read

The organisation Change have produced an easy read guide on the Standard. Take a look at it here.
